Creating Value in the Workplace

We all love some degree of routine in our daily work lives.  Whether it’s checking our email first thing in the morning or taking lunch at the same time every afternoon, routines can comfort us by making the day more manageable.  Too often though, our comfort with the way things are leads to complacency and stagnation in the workplace, which is why recruiters are actively seeking candidates that not only embrace change, but create it.

All innovation requires change, and every improvement that a business makes- whether it’s a multibillion dollar merger or buying a cheaper brand of printer ink- starts with an individual idea.  Someone must first envision a better way of doing things and then devise a plan to make it happen.  So why shouldn’t this person be you?  You don’t have to be a top executive or even a manager to envision positive change.  Maybe you know of a more efficient way of filing memos or maybe you have a fun idea to improve employee morale.  Even small changes will make you stand out as an innovator.

Challenging the status quo as a newcomer in any organization can be intimidating, but adopting a “don’t rock the boat” mentality is even more destructive to an organization than failed attempts at positive change.  Remember that you were hired for a reason- your employer wanted someone or something new in his workplace.  Any employer worth working for will appreciate genuine innovation and will encourage employees to strive to be more efficient.  Don’t be afraid to experiment and find the better way of doing things.
